Hello Neighbors,
We had a great parade meeting last night and a great meal! Thanks to all who attended and volunteered ideas and help!
And thanks to parade sponsor, Jeff Mabrey and Rockin' Tomato for a 'delicious' meeting! Have you seen his 1948 Chevrolet panel truck yet? Last year Jeff and his family walked the BHNA parade, this year they'll travel in style in this former milk truck, now undergoing restoration; watch for it and say hi to Jeff!
Below is a summary of needs. Please feel free to jump in and help however you can! Get your kids and grand kids involved too; it's fun for all, and it won't work without YOU!!
DECORATIONS* Does anyone have patriotic decorations you want to give or loan to our parade team for decorating trailers, cars and the playground? Now's a good time to put all that red, white and blue to good use! Call us!!!
* Help needed! Would you like to help decorate either before the parade or the morning of the parade?
* PLEASE contact Janis and Bob Daemmrich at 445-6282 or bob@bobphoto.com. Their trailer will be at 1813 Brookhaven for decorating prior to the parade.
REWARDS* Ride in the trailer during the Parade! Bob has room for about 15 people on the trailer. If you wish to participate in the parade, and just don't have the 'legs' for it, or just wish to ride and wave to parade watchers...give Bob and Janis a call.
GAMES * Wheelbarrow Races - Since we're not doing the pinatas this year, another alternative suggested by our own Yates Barreda, are wheel barrow races. What do you think? We already know of two wheelbarrows people are willing to lend for the occassion; do you have one to lbring to the playground? We need one or two people to coordinate the races (adults/children; couples)...and submit the winners of each 'heat' for ribbons. PLEASE volunteer to coordinate this fun game!
COOKIES* While many of you have volunteered for cookies, we can still use more! PLEASE bring cookies to the playground prior to the parade. You may contact cookie and watermelon coordinator, Lisa Fehrenkamp, for further instructions at lisafehrenkamp@yahoo.com or 444-3211. Thanks Lisa!
IGLOO Containers* I need 2-3 more large Igloo containers for water and lemonade. PLEASE let me know if you have one to loan.
I think this is all for now...more later! Thanks to ALL!
Kay

Hello Barton Hills Neighbors,
Many thanks to all who have volunteered through emails, phone calls and most recently, attended our July 4th Parade coordinating meeting! We're such an "involved" neighborhood, and it's wonderful to see the enthusiastic response from our neighbors and friends.
We've identified some specific needs for the 2006 Parade which is coming up FAST, so if you see a niche you can fill, please contact me with your interests.
FOOD Cookie donations; we still need more. Watermelons; please let me know if you usually bring one (or some) Lisa Farenkamp has graciously offered to help coordinate set-up and food donations again this year and can be reached at
lisafarenkamp@yahoo.com or 444-3211. Also on-board again this year are Debby Kalk and her daughter, Stella. Remember to bring cookies to the playground by 8:00am, and watermelons need to be iced down early.
SET-UP/CLEAN-UP Much of this is completed by neighbors who pitch in and make it happen on the spot--thank you! Please let me know if you're one!
CARS & TRAILERS We can still use several other convertibles and/or pick-up trucks and trailers, if you have one to drive in the Parade, please let me know.
5 GALLON IGLOO COOLER We typically have 4-5 Igloos. If you have one to spare, please let us know.
GAMES Does anyone know who has the feed sacks from last year for the two-legged races? We need several volunteers to be on-board to help coordinate these fun games and identify winners for the awards.
Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest - We need someone to watch those pesky little black seeds, and see how far they travel.
Tug-O-War - Does anyone have a long (preferably natural fiber) rope?
Pinatas - If anyone feels strongly about this activity, we need volunteers, otherwise it will go away.
Bocce Ball - NEW this year and coordinated by Chuck Ragland and John Luther.
JUDGESWe need at least three (3) judges for decorated vehicles, etc.
SIGNAGECalling all artists! We need someone to make signs for the sides of the vehicles for our special guests. This can be done on posterboard...with a Barton Hills flair!
SPONSORSPlease invite businesses and merchants you frequent to participate as a sponsor for $50, $100, $150, or $200. They can participate in the parade and we'll acknowledge them at the Playground and in the next newsletter.
TABLESWe'll need 6' tables. If we rent them, we'll need assistance transporting them to/from the playground.
SINGERAlas, our very own Sarah Hickman and family will be on vacation this year during the Parade. Does anyone know of another neighborhood "voice" to sing the National Anthem?
VETSPlease remind all VETS that we wish to honor them, so please invite all to attend.
BALLOONSVolunteers needed to fill helium balloons and transform the playground into a RED WHITE AND BLUE party!
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP! IT WILL BE ANOTHER AUSTIN-TACIOUS BARTON HILLS JULY 4TH PARADE WITH YOUR HELP AND PARTICIPATION! Oh, and let's do our South Austin Best to KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD!
Don't forget to come to the neighborhood meeting on June 13; and please come a little early (6:30pm) and lets talk PARADE!
See you soon!
With best PARADE wishes,
Kay Killen
