Barton Hills Neighborhood Association

Barton Hills-Horseshoe Bend Neighborhood Association
Executive Committee Meeting Minutes
March 29, 2001
Attendees
Officers present were Joe Gieselman, Robin McKeever, Rafael Quintanilla, Kay Killen, and Sharon Slagle.

Joe Gieselman called the meeting to order shortly after 7 pm.

Agenda for Next General Meeting
Agenda items for the April 24th meeting will include a 20-minute presentation by Doug Ballew from Austin Travis County’s Health and Human Services Department speaking on child bicyclist and pedestrian accidents in our neighborhood and how to prevent them.
Newsletter The April issue of the newsletter will include these articles:
  • From Joe: an article on the high child-bicyclist/pedestrian accident rate in our zip-code area.
  • From Joe: an article on BHNA priorities as identified in the membership application survey.
  • From Joe: articles updating readers on the planned Officer Jones Memorial Garden, on traffic calming and construction plans for Barton Springs Road and Barton Skyway, on planned Zilker Trail
  • From Joe and Kay: an article on our zip code’s recent “Hubcap Award” for high voter turnout during the November election. Kay will display the award at the April 24th general membership meeting and then put it on display at the Barton Hills Market.
  • From Robin: an article on TxDOT plans for Mopac/183.
  • From Robin: an article soliciting a 4th of July Parade committee chair.

All articles are due to Emily by April 3rd with the goal of having them printed and prepared for mailing by April 14th.

ANC Update Kay reported that the April Austin Neighborhood Council meeting focused on neighborhood concerns related to traffic generated by proposed Mopac improvements.
Treasurer’s Update Rafael and Joe have set up our new bank account: the balance is $7835.61 with an additional $35 check not yet deposited. Since taking office in January, Rafael has received 209 membership checks; however, the membership is larger than 209 families because some people prepaid before January.
Miscellaneous Business Officers agreed to ask Gloria Hill to set up a list server for BHNA information-sharing. Joe is drafting guidelines for membership use of the server, which will be restricted to paid members. Controls will include these steps:
  • The Treasurer will authorize any additions to the list server. (All members will automatically be added to the list server and will be given instructions for removing their own names if they so desire.)
  • Guidelines for members on appropriate usage of the forum will be posted on the list server.
  • The Vice President will issue a warning to any member who abuses privileges.
  • On majority vote of the BHNA Executive Committee, privileges will be withdrawn from a warned member who continues to abuse them.

We will defer our annual Barton Creek Cleanup until January of next year rather than connect with the City-sponsored Clean Sweep scheduled for April 7th, which will focus on Festival Beach.

If a special Austin mayoral/city council election becomes necessary due to resignation of current office holders, we may want to collaborate with at least one other neighborhood association on a candidates’ forum.

Joe will pull together a Strategic Planning Committee, to include past BHNA presidents.

Robin will coordinate work to replace the BHNA Meeting Notice signs.

Robin will draft a letter to use soliciting newsletter advertisements from local businesses, and Kay will create a certificate to award businesses that purchase ads.

The meeting adjourned at 9 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Slagle
Recording Secretary
